How prevalent are the homeless around the downtown area? especially at night?
Last year a vagrant just wandered into a place I was staying and acted very casual about it.
any thoughts??

Lots of homeless all over florida. It%26#39;s a free country, so you can wander wherever you like. There%26#39;s a difference between vagrants and the homeless. Many people in America are just a paycheck away from being homeless. People facing foreclosure do not need to notify their tenants that they are being foreclosed on, so tenants who pay their rent on time are close to being homeless.
If you are homeless, where yould you rather be: In Minnesota where you might freeze outside, or in Florida where you can sleeep outside year round?
That said we have as many ordinances as we can to prevent the homeless from loitering downtown. So many ordinances in fact that it prevents charitable organizations from soliciting money in the plaza. No more fundraisers downtown, which sucks for our local charities like Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
Tourists still toss beggars money, ensuring their continued presence.

Animalluv,
Growing up in and around the old city I can say that this is a none issue. Yes you will see a few begging for money. I can say that the worse time was about 6 or so years ago a begging person had a sign';will work for food'; at a intersection I saw a lady turn around stop and give him a pizza when she drove off he threw the pizza away because, he wanted money for what ever reason drugs or what ever his vise was ( I saw this because , I was in a parking lot at that intersection) that really turned my stomach.
Its like the seagulls on the beach you feed them they will swarm and return with more seagulls . Stop the feeding and you stop the problem ( somewhat)
i would have taken it if someone gave me a free pizza lol. Yes you won%26#39;t see homeless wondering around st george street any longer .
