Posting back to uk from FloridaMore than likely; I know a Family who posted most of their old and dirty clothes back so they could fill the cases with new. And they got the customary ticket through the door that their parcel have Been held up in customs they wanted import duty, Vat, and 拢6;00 parcel examination. Dont know weather they had to pay or not. But the husband was going to tell them to keep the package if they still said they had to pay. I will have to remember to ask him what the end result was.
Under international postal agreements, the sender must make a customs declaration on a form, which, in most cases, will be attached to the package. The declaration includes a description of the goods, their value and whether they are gifts or commercial items.
The Post Office may charge you for clearing your package through customs. They handle packages for customs examination and, if required, open and re-pack them. The Post Office will also store packages if customs need to make enquiries; for example, when the contents have not been declared properly by the sender. The Post Office fees are collected at the same time as customs charges but are completely separate and customs cannot reply to queries about them.
Usually the Post Office will collect charges on delivery. A charge label will be affixed to the package at the Customs Postal Depot. This will show the amount of customs charges to pay as well as any Royal Mail fee applicable.
Sometimes you may be sent a declaration form, which you must complete and return to the depot before a customs package can be delivered. You should not send any payment of customs charges with the form unless you are asked to do so.
Thanks for the info
Soozi hate to say this but have you checked your allowance... I panicked coming back last year - our allowance was 2 x 20kgs... stupid me thought 2 x 20lbs... god I could have bought loads more... we had even bought 2 new cases whilst out so had 2 cases each (3 of us).. By the way we bought for $10 a ';Travelon '; luggage scale with tape measure from the Samsonite shop in the premium outlet on vineland ave... this has been invaluble (providing you really know what you%26#39;re allowed.. whoops did it again this year -whilst getting ready for tallinn - what a plonker!)
Hi Thanks for your reply,im afraid my case weighs nearly 20kg going out so i keep taking things out so i can bring more back.Next year we will have to try to book with an airline that has the big baggage allowence.Cant help it we become shopaholics over there-%26#39;Cant wait%26#39;
Thanks for the tip about the luggage scale too!
wow sooz.. 20kgs going out.. why not take it nearly empty and just buy what you need there, fabulous bargains....also if you need new luggage take an old peice out and replace...
if you send things home -yes you do get charged... i did from hong kong seeral years ago.
The other thing i do when i bring loads of stuff back and often above the level allowed is to write everything down.. maybe I dont always remember the cost correctly.........doh and go through the red channel..offer the list ... we have always been very pleasantly surprised at how little we have had to pay.the guys have always been so reasonable.. now if we had gone through the green one.. hmm suspect we may have been charged more..and maybe lost some of the stuff..
remember childrens clothes do no carry any levy...
and include any duty free items bought going out in your costings...
hope you have a fab holiday and enjoy your shopping..
There is really no need to take 20kg per case out with you. I%26#39;d do a bit of clothes shopping out there to make up for anything you didn%26#39;t take. I%26#39;ve also found that excess baggage charges seem to vary by airline but that it is often nearly as cheap as the postage and customs charges levied.
All I normally take are some shorts, swimming wear, a few t shirts from Matalan, Flip Flops, elasticated pants and toiletries.
Don%26#39;t bother with towels, hair dryers, hair straighteners, curling tongs or any other hair related paraphernalia and you%26#39;ll be fine.
I forgot undercrackers.
