Rechargeable batteries and airlines

I heard (read?) somewhere that the airlines are cracking down on rechargeable batteries? Are you not allowed to carry them on or can they still be in your checked luggage? I%26#39;m concerned as we%26#39;re traveling with a digital camera, a camcorder and a laptop.

You cannot carry ';extra'; ones in either carryon or checked luggage because of isolated incidences of them ';blowing up'; or some such.

Any rechargable batteries you have must be in the device only and you cannot carry extras, at least I I understand the rule.

Lithium Batteries Consumer electronic and medical devices (e.g. watches, calculators, cameras, cell phones, laptops, camcorders, hearing aids, etc.) containing lithium cells or batteries may be transported as carry-on or checked baggage for personal use. All spare lithium batteries not housed in electrical devices must be in carry-on baggage only and individually protected to prevent short circuits.

To properly transport spare lithium batteries:

Pack spare batteries in carry-on baggage.

Keep spare batteries in the original retail packaging to prevent unintentional activation or short-circuiting.

If original packaging is not available, effectively insulate battery terminals by isolating spare batteries from contact with other batteries and metal. For example, place each battery in its own protective case, plastic bag, or package or place tape across the battery%26#39;s contacts to isolate terminals.

Take steps to prevent crushing, puncturing, or putting a high degree of pressure on the battery, as this can cause an internal short circuit, resulting in overheating.

Thanks for posting the ';correct'; information. I was way off. All these rules are very confusing and seem to get worse all the time.

I agree Kat. I even printed out the info from their website, figuring I%26#39;m protected if some dingaling gives us a hard time at the gate! LOL

I%26#39;ve heard that the TSA agents are all always on the same page.

Normal rechargeable batteries are not lithium based things like AA batteries for cameras etc. Therefore I assume from this that they are allowed to be carried on still?

Play safe. Stick each battery in its own sandwich bag and then put them inside one bag. When customs look at you like an idiot just point out you are playing safe
