Recent assaults in Destin?

My parents, 16 year old brother and one of his friends recently returned from spring break in Destin. On their last night my brother and his friend got assaulted by about 7 boys right outside their condo. Allegedly a group of local boys have been going around and beating up tourists, telling them to ';get out of my town.'; (told to my parents by cops at the ER) Now I wasn%26#39;t there so I don%26#39;t know if my brother was being a jerk or not but he wasn%26#39;t drinking and it wasn%26#39;t excessively late, and they were right on the beach in front of the condo where my parents could still open the door and see them. (to answer all the questions upfront about boys on spring break) Has anybody heard about this, or know anything about this group of boys?

Yes, please tell us where they were staying. I posted a while back about teen safety on the beach at night. I have 2 teenage girls that usually go with us each year. They like to go out walking at night which I have never been comfortable with......

Not that this post is not serious, but I don%26#39;t think we need to go into panic mode. I%26#39;ve searched all the local papers and haven%26#39;t seen much. The most vicious recent article was a domestic dispute when a woman threw a frozen pizza at her husband. Seriously.

But Lilly I am sorry your family had a bad experience and hope your brother and friend are doing well.

I definitely was not panicing (sp?). We have been to Destin many times during spring break. The condos we stayed at always hired extra security guards to patrol in front of the condos so things like this would not happen. I just wondered where they stayed because it is obvious they do not hire security or if they did, someone was napping.

I haven%26#39;t read about any problems, but it would not be unusual for it to not be in the paper either.

I think beach safety is a concern and always should be. Some areas are better then others, but I would feel better if my kids were with a group instead of just a couple.

Lilly mentioned HER brother and his friend; no relation to each other. The nwf article is dated today, makes no mention when this incident happened and, if I can assume any type of professionalism within journalism, would have the reader assume that the two boys ARE siblings.

This may not have been the most interesting assignment, but I think Robbyn B and the news editor could have done a better job of investigating and reporting.

Also, the article indicated Okaloosa Island; Lilly said Destin. I%26#39;m sure it does not make any difference to Lilly%26#39;s brother, but one town may get an inappropriate rap.

We have not heard back from Lilly. I wondered if this was separate or if it was about the two she mentioned. Some facts do not match up to what she said so maybe it is different?

Sorry for not responding sooner, I didn%26#39;t realize this many people had posted! The article does sound familiar, actually, with some differences. My brother suffered a broken jaw and needed facial reconstructive surgery to put his teeth back into place and is on a liquid diet for 6 weeks. And his friend wasn%26#39;t injured as bad, my brother took the brunt of it. It was 6 or 7 guys, and my parents did file a police report. The boys are caucasian so I%26#39;m not sure what kind of ';b'; racial slur could have been used... They said the main taunt was that they were tourists and should leave their town. I don%26#39;t know what condo they were at, and I haven%26#39;t called to ask my mom, I%26#39;m letting her deal with the stress of my brothers surgeries first.

And I agree, it shouldn%26#39;t incite panic, but it just goes to show you that there are jerks everywhere. My father didn%26#39;t seem to think that the cops were going to do anything about it, even though they were told this follows the same pattern of recent other assaults in the area.
