Pirate Cruise

I would highly recommend it. We took our kids (11 and 9) last year and they had a blast. My wife and I enjoyed it as well.

A rarely mentioned Key West gem

A lot of people casually walk past St. Paul%26#39;s church at the corner of Duval and Eaton. It is a gem. The stained glass windows alone are something to be seen. One thing that most visitors don%26#39;t know about is a daily organ and/or piano recital performed by the church%26#39;s organist and choir director, Joseph Lowe. This is a daily event every day Monday through Friday. The music varies from classical to pop.

The recital is from noon to 1PM Monday through Friday.

A rarely mentioned Key West gem

Thanks for the info. That would be a nice way to take a break from the mid-day sun.

A rarely mentioned Key West gem

It is indeed a beautiful church with lots of history. Sunday services are joyful and well attended by locals and visitors alike. We%26#39;ve had some interesting experiences there, to be sure.

Thanks, Simkeith, that sounds like something my wife and I would cherish. I am definitely putting it on our must-do list for our upcoming visit.

You know Keith I had meant to do this last week when we were there and it totally slipped my mind. Did you go in and listen? There%26#39;s nothing like the thunderous sound of a grand pipe organ - either theater or church style.

WOW! I have been going to KW for about 20 years now, and I had no idea. I will definitely put this on my ';to do'; list for July. Thanks for the great info.... It is such a beautiful church, and the music will just add to the charm.

Cheers!

Yes, I went in and had a listen last Tuesday. I just happened to be in the neighborhood around noon time, and saw the sigh outside the church advertising the lunch time recitals. The organist was performing pieces by Italian Baroque composers that day.

It%26#39;s free, but they will gladly take a donation.

That is such a beautiful church, inside and out. My husband and I went in and walked around last year. I had no idea there was a daily music recital. Thanks Keith.

The church, along with other locations in Key West, was used in the movie %26#39;The Rose Tattoo%26#39; (1955) with Burt Lancaster and Anna Magnani.

Also used was the Mardi Gras Club which from what we can figure was located on the west side of Duval just north of Front Street where the CVS drug store is. And yes that is Tennessee Williams sitting at the bar (striped shirt) when Serafina (Anna Magnani) walks by on the way to the %26#39;back room%26#39;.

Serafina%26#39;s house is the house next door to Tennessee Williams Key West house which was 1431 Duncan St.

  • Trip to Cuba a possibility from Key West?

I%26#39;m travelling around the florida keys diving for a few weeks with friends, in early June, ending up in key west. we%26#39;re a group of Brits touring the US and we%26#39;d like to take a trip to cuba while we%26#39;re so close to take a look around. Does anyone know if there are flights or boat trips to cuba available from Key West?

Trip to Cuba a possibility from Key West?

Sorry, there are no such trips.

Trip to Cuba a possibility from Key West?

None legally. Cuba is off limits to most Americans right now, and there is no direct air or ship link. Now whether you could get a fishing boat to discretely take you there, is another story altogether.

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g34345-i53-k842291鈥?/a>

You would have to go to Jamaica or Mexico and travel from there.

If you try it from the US and are caught, you will be deported and banned from the US for a minimum of 10 years. You probably also get on one of those TSA lists......

As a Brit, you can travel freely to Cuba. To get there from here, you%26#39;d have to book a flight to Jamaica, Bahamas or Mexico and then to Cuba.

This is likely to change over the next few years. It%26#39;s in the wind. We are waiting to see what happens.

Dang, posted at the exact same time. Go figure! BTW, the U.S. government, in addition to all the things described above may take away your birthday and make you vote in the upcoming presidential election. Too gruesome to comtemplate!

I%26#39;m just curious. Every time I%26#39;m in the Miami airport there are flights on the board to Havana. Who is on those flights??? Relatives? Journalists?

Can the folks who started this thread fly there on those flights?

jeanh - Those flights are charters for relatives of Cubans and expats. They are allowed limited visits. I noticed also that Gulfstream does a lot of those charters from MIA.

Ah! That explains it! I was wondering the same thing as JeanH!

Cuban ex-pats used to be able to return to Cuba to visit relatives with a special Visa (direct flights from the US) every 3 years. I think it was under the Bush admin that it has now been changed to once every 10 years. Those are some of the direct flights you would see on the monitors at Miami International.

    Taxi's 5,000 Post!

Either you have or will have your 5,000 post for this forum, congrats Q!!! Many more posts to come!

    Taxi's 5,000 Post!

That makes for a lot of wit and wisdom about KW. Thanks for your advice and info.

    Taxi's 5,000 Post!

and a lot of time on the computer ;%26gt;)

    Holy Smokes! That%26#39;s a lot of blabbin%26#39;

Your %26#39;blabbin%26#39; is very much appreciated. Key West should give you a key to the city or at least reduce your real estate taxes, afterall you%26#39;ve played a big role in promoting KW tourism and helping the KW economy.

    Thanks...

Thank you Taxi, and to maybe 5000 more!

    Congrats on 5000, Q. You%26#39;re a great blabbermouth. LOL

    congratulations Q! You%26#39;re the K.W. Man!!

Thanks KWT! Your knowledge of the keys and the fact that you share it with all of us is very much appreciated!

WOOHOO Q!!!!!! You are the best!!! Congrats!

    Thank you friends!

I%26#39;ve said it before but it rings true...it%26#39;s VERY satisfying to help someone have a better vacation just by typing a few lines or suggesting a place to avoid. Those trip reports are vital---this is a two way street, the locals learn too from your reactions to different things you%26#39;ve done!

I hope this stays nice and busy over the summer!

  • booking through the website

So, I need a room for a few nights in Sept. and I noticed that the White Sale at thebeachloversbeach.com has some coupons for 25% off any stay at Emerald Beach, The Majestic Towers, and Long Beach. I know most people swear by vrbo.com (I%26#39;ve used it too), but I am curious if anyone has rented directly through these places websites. If so, what are their policies on the 200.00 dep. Can you get it back when you leave or do they mail it. Are there any additional fees they try to charge you with once you get there? They have some great rates with the discount, so they are on my list for now.

    booking through the website

I have rented through Long Beach Resort before and all I can say is STAY AWAY! My experience was a few years ago, but when we arrived the condo was not on the range of floors we requested, had full size beds instead of the queen beds advertised, and was filthy. The unit had obviously not been cleaned at all, and the previous occupants had left trash all over the floor.

After arguing with the crew in the office for an hour, we were allowed to look at other units and we looked at two more before we found one clean enough to stay in. The beds were still the wrong size but we were stuck because no other units were available.

Just my experience for what it is worth.

    booking through the website

I rented a one bedroom condo at Long Beach a couple of years ago online. When I got there, they charged me for a 2 bedroom condo which we did not need. The girl was very rude, but finally found us a one bedroom. There were numerous problems with the condo-a leak in the bathroom, sliding doors that didn%26#39;t work, etc. We called about the bathroom leak and they sent someone up who said he fixed it, but it still leaked. My husband called the front desk and asked where the ice machine was and the girl told him Circle K across the street. When we checked out, we still had a hassle over the bill and the new girl said she couldn%26#39;t figure out what in the world they had done. Needless to say, we never stayed there again even though they have a very nice pool. My sister in law rented one from them online and when they arrived there were no sheets on the bed. They told them they couldn%26#39;t help them because housekeeping had left for the day. They had to go to Wal-Mart and buy sheets! I would just be cautious if I rented online and call ahead to make sure they got the reservation right.

When we stay at LB we book directly from the owner that we found thru vrbo a few yrs ago. We have never had any problems what so ever. Pretty nice guy and the cleaning crews have let us in early on occassion. I think it is like everywhere you have watch who you rent from.

    Orlando maps

Anybody bought an Orlando map from www.orlandomaps.co.uk?

If so is it a really good map, worth paying 拢7.

    Orlando maps

    Dreaminghigh,

I can%26#39;t advise you on the company you mentioned but here is a free resource.

Also when you get here stop at any fast food restaurant and pick up a coupon book. They all have maps and coupons for free stuff.

    Orlando maps

Hi, yes I got a map from them.

It is LOADS better than the %26#39;freebie%26#39; maps you get from the tourist brochures, we found the map very useful, but it didnt include every minor road, just the main ones. Its also got the restaurants and attractions marked on the map which came in useful too!

I am not in anyway connected with the company. And we are glad we bought the map, really helped us when we needed to re-plan a route to avoid traffic/accidents!

I would recommend it. Although you could print out maps for free from one of the many online sites.

I also bought map from them before we went, very helpful,it didnt stop us from getting lost but it was alot easier to find out where we were with all the hotels and restaurants listed on it.

    Highly recommnded,only map we used.

    best exchange rate

Does anybody know where i can get the best rate of exchange? Travel money services seem to be the best although the rate has dropped since last week

    Thanks

    best exchange rate

    www.comparetravelmoney.co.uk

Useful site. Rates change constantly, keep an eye on it and buy when it improves (although I dont know that it will improve!)

Pay in advance sites like crown currency often have a good rate - although I preferred to hold on to my money in a good interest savings account which meant I got the interest, and I changed my money up when the rate was $2 to the pound.

    best exchange rate

Market fluctuations aside* the best rate is obtained by sticking your debit card in an ATM when you arrive in the US.

All cards perate on the prevailing ';city'; rate, not the ';tourist'; rate that%26#39;s used as the basis for exchanges of currency and travellers%26#39; cheques. Tourist rates are typically around 5% worse than city rates.

Most card issuers shade the city rate by, say 2.75%. Even these offer a better rate than tourist rates. A select few card issuers (Nationwide is one) don%26#39;t even do this.

    * Between now and when you travel, they may change either in your favour or against; this is wholly unpredictable.

Has anyone stayed at Vista Cay Condos, we are going there next week, and wondered how difficult it was to get to the parks from there as we have not got a car

    vista cay

We are staying at Vista Cay too in the summer, we have been advised to get a car because not only for transportation to and from the parks, but because its a self catering accommodation, to get to and from local supermarkets.

I have read on here, that Publix should be opening nearby in May 2008, but i dont know that for fact.

Let me know, how Vista Cay is?

    Enjoy x

    vista cay

I got confirmation from Publix that the store right by vist cay will open the end of May 08

anyone know if the publix is open here yet?

There is a bus service at Vista Cay. It runs a half-hourly service for a while at breakfast time, again in the early afternoon until tea-time and then again in the late evening. This is LYNX 58.

It is a shuttle service to part of International Drive, where you can transfer to other services which go all over, including Disney and Universal.

At other times, you can probably walk over to I-Drive.

Look at the schedules for buses 58 (you are close to ';Shingle Creek'; on this schedule) and

    - 8 and 42 for service along I-Drive and between the outlet malls

    - 50 for an express service to/from Disney - you%26#39;ll need to ride an 8 to Sea World and then transfer

    - 37 to Universal - you%26#39;ll need to ride an 8 or 42 to a stop beyond WetNWild and transfer

Schedules are all at www.golynx.com . All these other routes run all day and fairly frequently; it%26#39;s only the 58 that has gaps.

    Prices:

$1.75 per one-way trip - it costs no extra when you transfer to another bus

$4 for all day unlimited use

    ^^^^^^^^^^^

from the driver, no change given

or $14 for 7 days unlimited use, buy in advance from certain outlets; there are two on or near I-Drive.

Are we pushing our luck on St Pete%26#39;s beach?

will we be struggling to find a decent place for 5 nights?

Thank you for your helpa dn advice in advance

    Paul

Arriving next week - not booked???

I don%26#39;t imagine you%26#39;ll have any problem - it%26#39;s not peak time in Florida.

You do know you%26#39;ll need to have a US address for your first night when you check in with the airline in the UK? You won%26#39;t get on the plane if you don%26#39;t have the first night organised.

Arriving next week - not booked???

    hi Rodger

i always stay at The Gulfside Resort on 70th Ave. Its a small block of apartments run by a couple and they are spotlessly clean and very reasonable priced. its about a 2 min walk to the beach and is close by to all the amenities. i would strongly recommend it, in fact im staying there in August.

the website is www.gulfsideresort.com and there are other reviews of the place on this site if you go into the search area.

    good luck

    Best place to buy Ipod

My daughter would like to buy an ipod wih her birthday money whilst we are in Florida ,where would be the best and cheapest place for her to buy this? Many thanks

    Best place to buy Ipod

Zometimes places like Best Buy and Walmart will have special offers on them. Check their weekly add online (come out every Sunday) to track prices.

    Best place to buy Ipod

Walmart would be a good option. Plus, there%26#39;s always the Apple shop at the Florida mall. You can try them all out in there to your heart%26#39;s content.

    Thanks for the advice.

I found the cheapest places were BestBuy and Costco

Apple sets the price. Not a lot of need to shop around.

We tried shopping around for one last week but as the last post said its set by Apple so the prices were all much the same.... UK or USA you%26#39;ll pay the same.

Nintendo DS%26#39;s are much cheaper though so I was happy :D

    Yes,

apple sets the price. But I bought 2 at best buy in November and received a gift cetificate worth 拢15 for each, so effectivley a discount. I used one to buy accessories and will use the other next trip.

So yes, it is worth shopping around as you won%26#39;t get these deals at the apple store.

Or you can just buy one for convenience and forgo any special offers if time is short and you don%26#39;t have a car. Just don%26#39;t buy one on Idrive whatever you do.

If you must have brand new, skip this post.

Every pawn shop in the country has them for sale. I bought my like-new $400 iPod Touch with 16GB for $90. Works like a charm!

Walmart is a good option for UK buyers - if your item breaks down, then you can return it to a UK ASDA store for a refund.

    how long

    About 40 to 50 mintues.

    how long

A lot depends on the time of day and which route you take. Last August it took us 1 hour to get to Disneyworld using the I4 route at 8pm. If we had travelled 2 hours earlier it would have taken longer.

thank you for your help. as far as we know it will be around 4.30 on a friday in july. we will use the 417 route unless anyone can advise on a better one. i have only travelled from orlando international before. any advice is greatly appreciated. thanks again. mrs disney1

Yes, at 4:30 PM on a Friday, do use the 417 route.

Stay as far away from I-4 at that time of day as possible; evening rush hour traffic on Friday afternoon is nothing to be in the middle of.

thank you. i hope i get there in one piece. it is very daunting.

Orlando is an inland city not on the Ocean- you would have to travel about an hour by car to get to the coast for salt water fishing of any kind.

    Mango,

If your looking for saltwater fishing near Orlando you can either travel 45 min. to an hour East to the Titusville or Cocoa Beach area (same distance)where you%26#39;ll find Inshore and Nearshore fishing Guides and Offshore fishing Charters. You%26#39;ll need to book a week or two in advance to get whatever day they have left available or, book a few months in advance to insure a specific date. Inshore you%26#39;ll catch Redfish, Spotted Sea Trout and possible Snook and Tarpon. Offshore you can catch Tarpon, Cobia, King Mackerel, Spanish Mackerel, Tripletail and False Albacore. Enjoy your vacation!

This is quite spiritual. Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

Drive to Newcastle from Scotland 20/06/08 and fly to Orlando 21/06/08 first timers, so excited and nervous all at same time. Does anyone know if you can buy the kids eat free card in Orlando or is it just online We are taking our 10yr old granddaughter with us and wondered if it would be worth getting. Hi,

Don%26#39;t let the worrying about driving spoil the excitement about your first time in Florida my other half had only passed his test 13 monthes before we went and he found it easy and enjoyable driving over there.Getting around will be a piece of cake just go and enjoy:)

thanks for advice will try and take it easy and enjoy ourself%26#39;s even the driving, do you know if you can buy the kids eat free card when you get there and is it worth getting.

Dont no if you can buy the card out there.. if you type it into google loads of sites that sell it come up so you might find one that could have it sent to your hotel/villa.

In my opinion the card is worth it others disagree..we definatly saved money using ours.

    have a good trip

    jackie x

Roxy i dunno about buying the kids eat free card in orlando, but i bought 2 online for my kids for 拢10 each they included an extensive list of restaurants where the cards could be used. The cards had no date on them so i dont know if their colour coded for different months. The great thing about these card is that they can be use for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner so you can make real savings. An average kids meal will cost about $3-$5 depending whether its breakfast or dinner so they could potentially save you maybe 拢30-拢35 for one child on the trip if only used once in the day. Is there no way that you could buy these online? Mine took between 2 and 3 weeks to come.

we go to newcastle on the 20th July and fly out on the 21st so dont know if I would get them on time and Ive never bought anything online before always been a little worried about doing it I know that sounds so silly lol

Just remember to get a good sunscreen, and put it on. And drink loads of water.

The %26#39;official visitor center%26#39; on International Drive has loads of information and reduced tickets (just follow the orange road signs on I-Drive). They are very helpful in there. You can get loads of the coupon books from them too (although you can%26#39;t use discount coupons with the Kids-eat-free card).

lots of suncream ready to go, will go to the visitors centre that sounds like it woul be helpful for first timers. I feel like I have never been on holiday before so used to to just going and having fun with no forward planning this is so stressful will need a week away when we get back lol.

    hand luggage question

We are flying out in two weeks time yippeeeeeeeeee!

Going with virgin , was wondering what the rules are on hand luggage items now? Can we take calpol in a bottle or has it got to be sachets? Kids not keen on plane food , can we take snacks on board such as crisps, choc bar, fruit ect? Do we have to purchase water when we are thru to departures? Many thanks in advance!

    hand luggage question

Hi - I dont think you will be allowed to take the Calpol in the bottle - it definately will be best to take the sachets. We always purchase food for the flight from M %26amp; S - we normally take sandwiches, cocktail sausages, crisps, mixed fruits etc. Do not purchase/take bottled water with you as it will get taken away - purchase it when you get through departures. Hope you have a great time - when you get back it will be our time to go.

    hand luggage question

    Hello

Best to take Calpol in sachets or buy it in Boots after you have gone through security..

Can take snacks onboard... we took crisps, sweets, choc and a box of 12 krispy kreme donuts with us and no at security said anything.

Drinks have to be purchased when you are through to departures.

    Jackie xxx

We have just got back from Orlando. The security is getting alot tighter both in the UK and USA.

From the UK, you are not allowed to take ANY liquid on as hand luggage if the bottle is bigger than 100ml (even if you say have a 200ml bottle that has say 50ml in it). We used the Virgin twilight check in (we stayed at Gatwick the night before the flight). We didn%26#39;t realise this liquid rule until the next day when going through security, and had to throw all our toiletries away that didn%26#39;t comply. Any liquids that you carry in your hand luggage that are less than 100ml, you have to seal in a small clear plastic bag (available from security). People were even told to put their lip glosses/mascara in bags. The clear bags are then individually scanned in the xray machine.

I think in Orlando the rules were similar, but they said things had to be in travel sized bottles %26#39;no bigger than 3oz%26#39;.

So I would say, get the sachets. And make sure you put them in one of the clear bags. The security took alot longer to get through as a result of these checks.

I think you can take fruit on the plane, but you cannot take fruit through customs in America - so make sure you eat it!!

For the record, this has nothing to do with the airline; this is UK (and US) government security policy.

We returned home on VS076 Orlando - Manchester on Monday 26th May 2008.

During the flight a large number of passengers appeared to suffer boubts of severe coughing and or sneezing.

Since arriving home all of our family (5 in total) have been very unwell, suffering flu like symptoms and high temperature.

Has anyone else on this flight suffered a similar experiance, as this is the second time it has happened to us !!!

I always get sick on flights home from Orlando. I think it%26#39;s a combination of germy kids and not being able to open the window!

I totally lost my voice on our recent flight to florida..it was awful I could speak for the first three days of our holiday (Horray my kids shout). Did it again on the way home. Its the recycled air on the airplane, not alot can be done about it, we always drink lots of water and take a few vitamin c supplements for the week before we travel to give us a boost.

    Car Hire

Hi i have just booked a holiday and have been given a free hire car as part of the deal, the only problem is the travel agent say it comes with insurance cover, but asked me if i wanted to upgrade to include CDW and local taxes etc, but they informed me thta would be additional cost of 拢360.00.

Obviously i thought that was disgraceful, they have said that i can pay the taxes when i get to florida.

Do i need this CDW, also would it be cheaper for me to pay when i get over there. any suggestions would be great.

I%26#39;m afraid you have discovered what many of us have known for many years - the ';free car hire'; is a complete and total con and I would avoid any travel company that offered it. It is a disgrace and a blot on the travel industry that people can still be taken in by this.

Basically, you have only the minimum third party insurance required by Florida law, and this is pratically useless. You do need the extras, some of which, like local taxes, you cannot avoid anyway, for peace of mind. Pay everything in the UK and do not take any extras in the US, however persuasive the sales chat. In any event, if you refuse CDW, you will have to lerave a large deposit with the car hire company.

Tell your travel company that you consider the free car hire to be grossly misleading and tell them you will not deal with them again.

    Car Hire

We%26#39;re from Canada, and have always booked our car online. Before we leave, we get a letter from our car insurance temporarily transferring our vehicle insurance from our personal vehichle to our rental vehicle. We pay the rental company with our credit card, and by doing (as with most major credit card companies), CDW is automatically covered with no extra charge. You should check this out with your insurance agent/credit card provider. It may be cheaper for you to pass on the ';complimentary'; car hire, and do it on your own.

The rules for visitors from the UK are totally different.

  • virgin hotel rooms

We have noticed that on previous holidays with Virgin the room allocation is not always %26#39;the best%26#39;.

When we stayed in the keys we were (as were all the Virgin customers) given a garden room, people that came in off the street, were straight away allocated sea view rooms. The Holiday Inn on Int. Drive you automatically get allocated a tower room. We noticed there are poolside rooms there too.

Do you reckon Virgin pushes the Hoteliers down so much on costing that they only get the basic rooms, and is it cheaper to %26#39;upgrade%26#39; yourself once you get there?

    virgin hotel rooms

I don%26#39;t think that the room allocation is specific to Virgin, all Tour operators negotiate the best deals with Hoteliers. We found, that even booking direct with the Hotels was far cheaper, and all room requests were met. Also, booking with the Hotel direct, we didn%26#39;t have to pay the Hotel bill until checkout, so you%26#39;ve got more bargaining power to obtain the room that you want.

    virgin hotel rooms

I normally book through virgin, never really had any probs. We recently stayed in sheraton vistana resort in LBV. We did notice that others arriving %26amp; staying around us all had tour operators luggage tags and people in the other bit were all owners, I wasnt disatiffied with my room I actually prefered it. We asked Virgin to request a room with a lift or ground floor (Wheelchair) and one not right next to pool and both of these were granted. The hotel knew about them and told me what they had done for us which was really nice.

You can ask for a room transfer or upgrade when you get there. If your not happy with what your allocated just ask.

For my trips to L.A. and Miami which have been booked through Virgin Holidays i called up both the hotels to see what rooms we have been allocated, and the things i am wanting weren%26#39;t in the rooms they had gave us such as a refrigerator, jacuzzi bathtub, so the hotels offered to do a complementary room upgrades and were more than happy to help. Always worth asking. I didn%26#39;t even ask for an upgrade they just offered:)

I%26#39;m excited about Margaritaville %26amp; Partners buying Trump Casino in Atlantic City. Looks like it will have a Key%26#39;s theme %26amp; all things Margaritaville :) A great place for us Easterners to get our fix in between KW trips!

    This sounds great!!!

Should be a lot of fun checking it out.

    Best days of the week

Hubby and I are coming to Key West in October (not for Fantasy Fest), staying right in the heart of the action at Pier House. We%26#39;re thinking about coming Mon-Thu, leaving Fri. Will we be missing anything by not being in town for the weekend? Or should we consider a Thu-Sun visit? We are 40-something empty-nesters who would like to drink, sight-see some, do the seaplane, party in Mallory Square, maybe catch a drag show. We are driving down from Ft. Lauderdale. Thanks all.

    Best days of the week

thurs thru sun would be my pick

thurs in oct thru sun in dec...it%26#39;s hard to leave :)

    have a blast!

    Best days of the week

You can do all of these things any day of the week.

My husband and I are mid-30%26#39;s and we like to have good meals, good drinks and walk around to check things out. We arrived at KW at noon on Tues (last week) and departed at 4pm on Friday and we had a great time. There was little crowd since this was the start of off season and Oct is off season as well. Sloppy Joes and Mallory Square at sunset were plenty crowded to be fun but not so much that you couldn%26#39;t get in and get a good view. There were cool people to visit with at all of the bars and we never had to wait to be seated at dinner. My idea of perfect timing!

BTW, we rented bikes and loved having them for our stay, the scooters looked fun too but biking is so easy since the cool part of town isn%26#39;t large and the island is flat.

Its really not going to matter. Like BG said above, you can do all of those things any day of the week. Go when you can get the best deal. FYI - Pier House has started some pretty serious renovations that are going to go on for some time. They are doing it in phases so not to impact the resort too horribly but I would double check what will be going on while you are there.

Monday through Thursday will allow you to do everything that is available in Key West that you have time for. You would not be able to do Sunday brunch at Martin%26#39;s Cafe but since they moved to Duval Street they have taken on a South Beach aura which doesn%26#39;t fit in. And you would miss the Sebago Island T%26#39;ing as it only goes out three days a week but you can replace this with the same type of trip on Danger Charters.

If you go over a weekend you would most likely wait at several places, sometimes as much as an hour or more to be seated; Blue Heaven for breakfast or dinner, Pepes for breakfast, Croissants de France for breakfast.

Key West gets noticably more crowded from Friday on through a weekend, so if I had the choice I%26#39;d do the Monday - Thursday instead of the other.

    Pjk

A day in Key West is better than a week in Orlando, so I%26#39;d say ANY (and all) days are good! :)

The best days in KW are the ones that end with Y. :)

what dates will you be down? wife and i will be at the Pier House Oct. 10th thru the 18th... if you there either Mon or Fri. you can catch the turtle races at Turtle Krawls..........

    flattop nailed it!

~~Hi Major! We usually opt for the Thurs-

Mon. trip just becaue it works for us. Yes

you can do any of those things mentioned any

day of the week but sometimes the better events

or shows fall on the wknd.

The BEST day of any week is the one you arrive

    to KW on!!!!!!!!!

    ~Cheers~

Key West Harbor Inn--is height a problem?

    Hi All,

My boyfriend and I are headed from the mainland to KW this weekend for our first romantic trip to the Keys. I booked us a room at the Key West Harbor Inn--the Jamaica room, based on the recommendation of Leonardo. I read something here on TA about the Jamaica being an old carriage house with a sloping roof.

    My BF is 6%26#39;6';....is this going to be a problem, where he would bump his head anywhere? Should I call to see what other rooms are available, or just ';tough it out?';

I would really appreciate hearing from people who have stayed in that particular room.

    Thanks!

Key West Harbor Inn--is height a problem?

Tough it out. Besides... This is a romantic trip to the Keys. Is there really going to be a lot of standing?? :-)

Key West Harbor Inn--is height a problem?

We were just in the Tobbago Room, 2 nd floor of building by the pool and it was wonderful. We aren%26#39;t that tall, but other than getting in the shower possibly, I wouldn%26#39;t see a problem. The inn is wonderful and I can%26#39;t wait to return.

Watch out for low flying ceiling fans!!

You probably read my comments about the Jamaica room. The bathroom ceiling is slanted. Men standing to urinate will hit their head if they%26#39;re much taller than my 5%26#39; 10'; husband. Just have him sit down.

The shower is wonderfull and the room is great. The only problem he will have is standing up to pee.

Thank you all for your input and advice...I guess it%26#39;s a small thing...after all, we%26#39;ll be in paradise, so that one little concern isn%26#39;t really a big thing....

Only three more days until Key West!

    Restaurant tips anyone ?

Will be heading to Miami today and would like to take my husband and mother-in-law to some nice trendy restaurants in Miami. Can anyone recommend anything ? (Mother-in-law is up for something new ;))

    Many thanks all.

    Restaurant tips anyone ?

I say Havana Harry%26#39;s Restaurant! They are a family based restaurant in coral gables with great cuban food and prices. I go there daily for my lunch break, and the food is waayyy better then other Cuban restaurants and I%26#39;ve been to them all. The WORST is Las Culebrinas and Lario%26#39;s.

It also depends Where in Miami you plan on being? South Beach has 100%26#39;s of options. I love the Van Dyke Cafe on Lincoln Road, or something fast like Pizza Rustica is great too.

It really depends on area and type of food you want to try!

Fiddler's Elbow - Credit card help..

Anyone hear of this bar/restaurant on gulf blvd?

    6110 Gulf Blvd

    St Petersburg, FL 33706

Do you know if they have a differnet name they go by? I got two charges from my St Pete vacation. First one was 58 dollars and then the next day 28 dollars.

I don%26#39;t remember a place by that name nor did I ever eat at the same place twice.

Fiddler's Elbow - Credit card help..

Checked with my sis who lives in St. Pete, she said nver heard of it.

    Any one else?

Fiddler's Elbow - Credit card help..

Thanks. I%26#39;m gonna call the number listed. Right now no one is answering and no machine.

It was just my wife and I so I can%26#39;t see us ever spending 58 dollar s+ 28 at a restaurant. Our bill barely hits 30 dollars.

So I was thinking maybe it was a dinner + a night at the bar at the same place but I just don%26#39;t remember any bars spending that much except Ricky T%26#39;s..I ate at their indoor bar and went outside to their beach bar.

Actually, I bet that%26#39;s it. For some reason Ricky T%26#39;s might go by an old name fiddlers elbow?

Yup it is. Ricky T%26#39;s has the same address.

I got it figured out, thanks guys.

We heard Beaches and Cream. Any others?

Beaches and Cream is good so are the carts around the parks. When I was at WDW had the kitchen sink at the beaches and cream. It was good and very filling

Fountainview has ice cream in Epcot. They might serve Edy%26#39;s :)

    Summer vacations in Florida

Hello,I just want you to know how we have enjoyed our summer vacations into coming to Florida. We live in Beautiful New England,But after spending such cold winters here;Florida feels sooo good.I know it%26#39;s hot,but all we do is go to the beautiful beaches and the nice pool everyday. It funny how our family of 4 can come to Florida for 10 days, air fare, rent a car and a beautiful hotel for 2,000.That%26#39;s cheap. We use to go to Martha%26#39;s Vineyard for many years but now they want 4 grand and you never know how the weather will be.I know its their busy season and all. When we come to FL I can%26#39;t wait to get to the beautiful beaches,FL,Hollywood and South Beach. They are all so close too.Just wanted you to know how much we enjoy your area. Lauski

    Summer vacations in Florida

I know exactly what you mean. Regardless of price something always draws us back to Florida. I hate Orlando mainly because of the massive invasion of Brits who think everything should be done their way, ditto for Clearwater Beach, however the rest of Florida gets two thumbs up from me.

    Summer vacations in Florida

I used to vacation here as a teen for many years that 2 years ago I couldn%26#39;t take it anymore. I am originaly from Montreal and coming from N.E you surely know how cold and wintry it gets. I packed up 4 suitcases (found a job first) and moved here. I wake up happy almost daily!!!!

...and you%26#39;ll be happy to know many of us feel the same way. Three of the past four years the missus and I have spent parts of the summer escaping the heat in Boston, NH, Maine and VT. It%26#39;s a great getaway, although pricey by Florida standards. Nice to get out of the heat and humidity and see some hills and history.

Whats happened to it??? Please help

Could anybody tell me what has happend to the Holiday inn thats next door to the days inn on south Beach Collins Ave, i walked passed last year and all shut up.

Is it going to be done up and made into a new hotel? if so whats the name?

It is on the way to become a W hotel which is Starwood%26#39;s

an upcoming Ritz. So, with the demise also of the Days Inn

that area will become quite posh.

What are you bringing in your hand luggage?

We are going in less than 3 weeks(so excited) and I%26#39;m thinking about packing etc.. we have 2 boys of 8 and 6 and as you all know it%26#39;s a long flight from Ireland to Orlando we will be brings gameboys etc.. we are flying with Monarch :( so I%26#39;m sure there is little or no inflight entertainment (we are lucky to have padded seats by the sounds of things) so does anyone have any suggestions what to bring to make it a bit more bearable? we do have a portable DVD player but there is only one jack for headphones and I don%26#39;t want them to annoy other passengers with a noisy kids movie so I%26#39;d love to hear what everyone else is doing?

We fly in 12 more sleeps so am thinking about the packing too.

I have a 10 year old daughter so we are taking:

    DS and a few games

    Gameboy and games (for me!!)

Travel games (got 2 from tesco, V cheap)

    Playing cards

    Comics / books

Note book and pens (to play squiggles)

Hoping that will be enough to keep her occupied.

    Have a great time

Don%26#39;t forget your bathsuits, just in case!!

    Hi

I downloaded episodes of Heroes and CSI Miami on to my iPod and iPhone as I have been on a plane where the In Flight ';entertainment'; is rubbish or not working properly. That more than coves the 9 hours.

I travel with AA and look forward to my fix of the Skymall magazine - better than out Innovations mag we get free with the Sunday papers....

    Di

Sky Mall is just awesome - it%26#39;s full of things you never knew existed, but suddenly you NEED them! I even wanted to buy these tablets you give to your dog to make all the hair round it%26#39;s mouth sparkly white again instead of dirty brown - and I don%26#39;t even have a dog!!! You can spend half the flight flicking through it easily!

I always try to pack as little as possible into my hand luggage but for some reason it always ends up weighing a ton.

I will have my tickets and passport, my money, my camera, my iPod, a book, my makeup, some boiled sweets and a hairbrush. Hopefully, I can stick to that list so that I don%26#39;t have to have the %26#39;I think you will have to check in that bag, miss%26#39; conversation with the flight staff.

Chantal Rose - what are %26#39;boiled sweets%26#39;? I know what a scotch egg is but never heard of boiled sweets.

i think you call them sugar candy in the states

ChantelRose, are you allowed make up in hand luggage, i know at one point it wasnt allowed, not 100% on the rules now, but have seen lots of women have to ';throw it away'; at the airport as its not allowed through security.

Hope the rules have been changed and i%26#39;m wrong!

I bought an adapter jack for my i-pod so both me and my hubby can listen at the same. It wasn%26#39;t that expensive and might save on arguments over who is going to watch the DVD player.

Yes! We bought a ';splitter'; (that%26#39;s what it was called here in Canada) for our DVD player that allowed two sets of headphones to plug into the one place. Makes all the difference when your kids can sit and watch a movie together. Make sure you have good quality headphones too or they won%26#39;t be able to hear a thing!

    Just got back....

Hey there! We just got back from 3 days in Orlando. We just wanted a quick jaunt away from the hum drum of things. It was perfect! We stayed at the Marriott Grande Vista. It is more of a time-share joint, but we had a fantastic time! Everything from the pools, to the staff, to the weather. An excellent time away.

Seaworld was great. We saw a couple of shows. We did not do Disney, MGM, etc....however, we hung out at Downtown Disney and had fun.

The best food came from the restaurants right off 4E (apparently the shi-shi side of town). I recommend eating over there.....

    Just got back....

Glad you had a nice, relaxing 3-day break! Like you say, the perfect break away from the hum drum.

Seaworld is underated. It%26#39;s a great chill out park, with non of the Disney lines! lol.

  • weather in october

    hi,

i will be travelling to Miami in early October and i would like to know what i can expect weather wise.

i%26#39;m hoping it will be shorts and t-shirts weather but maybe someone can give me an idea if i should expect rain/ thunderstorms etc.

    thanks

    weather in october

It will be warm, it could rain (with a chance of hurricanes).

The rain here in Miami is not usually the all day dreary affair it is in other places... it%26#39;s a fast moving brash rain that comes and goes quickly like a busload of tourists ( :-) ) or it%26#39;s a gentle rain where with sun is still shining.

    weather in october

I agree it will be warm, but not summer heat. You might even get lucky and get a cold front (to us South Floridians in the 60-70s F), but youll still have to deal with a high humidity.

    thanks for your comments

Depends on the day of the week and month of the year, as the times of the evening parade changes by date.

The afternoon parade is always at 3:00 PM.

Go to this site, change the month of your visit, then click on the actual ';date'; of your M.K. visit to get the times for the parade and fireworks of that day.

    Crescent lakes and surrounding area

    Hi all...

Could anyone tell me how far is Crescent Lakes from disney in the car. Also what%26#39;s nearby and considering that we%26#39;re arriving early evening where would one eat nearby as we will be too tired to search around

    Crescent lakes and surrounding area

Hello - Crescent Lakes is about 25 minutes from Disney by car. If you head out on the 192 there are restaurants located in both directions. One which we often go to is Outback Steakhouse (www.outback.com) and I can recommend this - they do not just do steaks but chicken, salads, burgers etc and this is very nice. Hope this helps and you have a great time.

    Crescent lakes and surrounding area

we found when we arrived in Orlando at about 7pm local time, we were tired, not really hungry (had food on plane that was actually good !), there was a Publix supermarket on our direct route to our villa (villa owner had told us exactly where), so we dropped in , got hot chicken salad, water, dips, drinkgs etc, enough to keep us going for a day or so, and really really enjoyed it, and then had a great nites sleep !!.. up at 5am next morning (10am Irish time)... want to go back.. did you read my trip reports ??

Thanks to both of you for the replies, your input is appreciated. I did read your trip reports GuinnessDublin and enjoyed them. Did you actually stay in Crescent lakes yourself and if so what was your opinion of it as a location. How long was the trip from the airport by the way???

Hello again - We purchased a Villa in Crescent Lakes three years ago - it is about 30 minutes from the airport. It is in a great location for Disney, the 192 and International Drive. Crescent Lakes is a quiet community and I am sure when you find your way around will love it as much as we did.

    Hi

We just got back 3 days ago from staying at Crescent Lakes. It is a good 25-30 minutes from there to the Disney parks. Was sometimes longer as there can be traffic during rush hour times. Alot of the road that leads to 192 is one lane either way, for some reason a lot of people drive 10-15 miles under the speed limit, very frustrating getting stuck behind them. There isn%26#39;t much food wise in the immediate area, you have to drive all the way to 192 for the chains, etc. There is a Publix and a few fast food places about 10-15 minutes down Orange Blossom Way. The subdivision itself is nice and quiet, but the distance did make it difficult to go back to the house for an hour or two in the middle of the day and then go back to the parks. The driving time added alot. I liked the house and area, but I don%26#39;t think I would stay quite so far away next time.

    has anyone used Ocean-Florida???

yes we just got bk with ocean florida on the 26th, did a two centre, hired a car and upgrade etc all part of a package, as ive no time to shop around for separate deals.

the only probs i had was their legroom on the premium upgrade, with ocean isnt as generous as travel city direct, and our tvs didnt work on the inbound flight making it a very long flight!!

i just got off the phone from from both ocean and t.c.d. literally 10 mins ago spooky!, i have just booked the travel city for next yr!!!

    t.c.d.qouted for 14nts port orleans/car hire and ins/sunshine first 38 inch seats/4okgs bag allowance etc 拢3987

ocean florida could only beat it by about 拢23!!!!

like i say wouldnt go with ocean for the sake of 拢23

as t.c.d have much better leg room and also new planes!!!

    Villas of Grand Cypress

Help.....after many days researching for 2 b/r (have 2 teenagers) centrally located good standard hotel, another post recommended, was just about to book and I see there is construction going on, has anyone just returned or have any information?? Was also considering World Quest we will have a car but also like to be reasonably close to restaurants for the evening, it looks a little isolated so Grand Cypress looked good, just really concerned about the construction?

Need to book to-day, going July, really appreciate any info.

    Villas of Grand Cypress

If i remember correctly, The V of G.c are too fairly isolated. Don%26#39;t get me wrong, it%26#39;s a luxurious resort with it%26#39;s own Golf course, but it%26#39;s not really walking distance to any restaurants.

If you wanted somewhere more suited to evening Restaurant scene, i%26#39;d recommend the Staybridge Suites. They are nowhere near the standard of VOGC, but they are very clean, and much more centrally located.

    Villas of Grand Cypress

I may be wrong but am wondering if you were actually referring to the ';grand villas at Cypress Pointe'; which are completely different to the Villas of Grand Cypress ?

The villas of grand cypress are on the same bit of land as the Hyatt property with extortionate prices, but very very luxurious though.

The Grand villas at Cypress Pointe are a more mid price family place with lots of good reviews from people on here.

I apologise for intefereing if you are indeed referring to the luxury villas that are with teh Hyatt property :-)

Why don%26#39;t you stay at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress, which is the hotel part! Much better then the villas...it%26#39;s a gret hotel, we have stayed there twice and enjoyed it both times.

Thank you to woffer, laura and perkin....I am referring to Villas of Grand Cypress, which are working out at actually very good value, which is why I am wondering is that because of the construction. I thought would be good to be in the same grounds as the hotel and use the facilities. My teenagers are 19 and 16 so two hotel rooms can work out really expensive, I will check out the hotel though as laura suggests and the Cyprus Pointe villas.

Don%26#39;t mind paying a bit more to stay in nice surroundings as looking to chill as well and do a bit of Disney. We also like to have a glass of wine with dinner which is why we like to be near restaurants....but maybe taxis more available than I think....thanks again for your help.

  • Christmas anything open

we%26#39;re going to FMB for 4days, returning home on Christmas day, does anyone know if restaurants are open Christmas Eve?

    Christmas anything open

    Yes they are.

    Christmas anything open

we want to go for a nice dinner on Christmas%26#39;eve, any suggestions?

There are a ton of choices, a few of my favorites are Charlie%26#39;s Boathouse, Anthony%26#39;s, the Bridge, Mantanzas or Parrot Key.

Mantanzas and Parrot Key have my favroite Menu. Anthonys has a great view.

    go blue girl,

    are those open Christmas%26#39;eve?

All are open Christmas Eve, Snug Harbor is on the back bay and Gulfshore Cottage overlooks the Gulf-both GR8 views. Fish Monger just before the Sky Bridge coming onto the Beach has excellent food.

Yep, they are open on X-mas Eve, have been going down there over the past 30 years and I have never had a problem dinning on X-mas or X-mas eve at the beach.

thanks to all for all the good suggestions, looking forward to being there

    international drive

We are going to orlando on the 19th june, could anyone advise which hotels or apartments are within walking distance of international drive, we have an 8yr old in a wheelchair and want to be able to walk to restaurants to eat at night.I was looking at floidays orlando resort, any thing like this would be good as we would like a 2 bedroom apartment. Also is the bus link wheelchair friendly? Thanks, any information would be a big help as need to book soon!!

    international drive

IMO floridays might be a little far out from the majority of restaurants on i-drive however the bus link IS wheelchair friendly so it shouldn%26#39;t really restrict you to walking distances anyway.

You will find most of the restaurants a little further up.....

    international drive

Floridays is a lovely resort, but it%26#39;s at the south end of i-drive, and somewhat isolated, making car hire a must.

Check out the Homewood suites i-drive, which is within easy walking distance to restaurants.

The Homewood Suites are not as luxurious as Floridays, but a much better compromise.

There are other Suite-style accommodations too, but some are set back on side roads, such as Canada Ave, American Way etc. It all depends how far you%26#39;d like to walk etc.

I stayed at Homewood and it was nice enough, and close to eating/entertainment. One thing - there%26#39;s two Homewood Suites - one up at Universal and one in the middle of iDrive so make sure you get the right one.

Penny try the homewood suites 8745 I Drive, perfect hotel, perfect location, walgreens supermarket next door, free food, free beer, huge suites, I could go on and on, but from what your asking it is perfect.

Oh I booked through travelsupermarket.co.uk but last year i booked through travel2florida.co.uk got a great deal both times

    Cheers ;-) Wullie

Sorry Penny:-( it was travelrepublic.co.uk i used this year.

    Cheers ;-) Wullie

    Discovery cove NON dolphin swim

I was wondering if it%26#39;s worth going even if you are not doing the Dolphin swim.

Friends of ours are doing the swim so we could go with them(i understand you need one %26#39;swimmer%26#39; per group). Cost is 拢84 inc seaworld admission.(which we were getting anyway) So it will cost about 拢50 each for the day but my 2 year old will be free

I want to do the dolphin swim for the first time with my daughter when she is old enough.

I was thinking it would be a relaxing day - any views? We are not doing any water parks

    thanks

    Discovery cove NON dolphin swim

we are going again this year and most of us are not doing the dolphin swim. That is (in our opinion) only a small part of the day. Feeding the rays and snorkelling next to the sharks and in with the fish was just as special for us. My little one loved finding the fish on the waterproof cards that you can get.

    Discovery cove NON dolphin swim

    hi

we did the swim over 6 weeks ago, it was fab but by no means the only reason I would go there, like you say there are lots of other things to do there, and al the nice food and snacks throughout the day, I would definatley go and not do the swim.

The non swimming option is definately still a good idea. We did Discovery Cove last year, myself and 3 kids did the dolphins and my wife didn%26#39;t but she still enjoyed the rest of the day. You only get half an hour with the dolphins so it is only a small part of the day. It was a very relaxing with no queues and plenty of spaces, would recommend it to anyone.

I did the dolphin swim glad I did cause I had trouble snorling one of the poster said you can feed the rays when I was there you could not do that and could not do really anything with the rays cause some of them are pregant so couldnt do anything but let them swim by you

    Hi Dixiechick

My boyfriend and I have been to Discovery cove twice and didn%26#39;t do the dolphin swim either time as we wanted a more personal interaction with dolphines. When we decided to swim with dolphines we went to Dolphin Plus in Key Largo which was great as you get two dolphines per couple and it%26#39;s much more relaxed i felt.

If you like a brilliant atmospher, great food and a relaxing day away from the hustle and bustle of the parks i would definately say go for a non dolphin swim day at Discovery Cove.

    hope this helps,

    Gem

    thanks everyone

Thanks for the info about key largo Buff G

We have been to the keys several times(before we had our daughter) and love it there.

I looked into a dolphin swim there but as husband wasn%26#39;t really interested I didn%26#39;t want to do it on my own!

  • Trip Report 5/26/08 Day 5

    Day 5 May 26

    Memorial Day!

We meet for breakfast at 7:30ish. This is going to be a busy day so I want a good breakfast. French toast Plate. Great! We leave POP after 8, and arrive at the Studios about 15 minutes later. I say rather shyly, let’s see if Toy Story is open. Hey, they all agree! We walk over, it is open. Stupid me, I should have suggested getting a FP, and then getting on ride. No just got in line. What a great attraction! Words cannot describe this. The walk through is fantastic. Every game I had as a child was displayed, and then some. Mr. Potato Head is up front talking up a storm. He is interactive with the crowd. I rode alone, but got teamed up with a guy from the single line. He had to have been on it before! I will not tell you my “score,” but he had over 300 thousand.

After that we headed over to TOT to get FP, and on to Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Staring Aerosmith. I suggested that my wife get the FP’s, as she doesn’t like coasters, but the girls said “no, mom should not go alone.” What is she going to do, get lost? Ok, the wait is 30 minutes, but it really only took 15. I love this ride!

Now we are off to Indiana Jones. It is full. My wife is disappointed. “Let’s do the great movie ride.” Really? It wasn’t too long of a wait; however, the fiancé decided to run over to Toy Story for FP’s, so we were separated. When he got off the ride, he was not happy. His reaction is not repeatable.

Now our FP’s are ready for TOT. My wife actually likes this ride, and does not like coasters. Go figure! The youngest does not like free falls, but went on with us. To me it’s ok. I do it every time, but I can take it or leave it.

    We went to a counter service place and had hot dogs. At the table next to us a little boy was screaming. Apparently, he did not eat his “regular” food, so he could not have a brownie, which his parents and sister were enjoying. ';Hey parents you want to teach your kids, do it at home not on vacation.';

After lunch, we got over to Indiana Jones. IMHO, it is a fun show out of the sun. Next we did the Back Lot Tour. This tour has improved as it goes by the practice area for the Lights, Motors, Action Extreme Stunt Show. So we saw them practicing; now we had to see the show. I had seen the show last year, but this year I didn’t have to be worrying about the little ones. It is a really great show. A definite must see.

Muppet Vision 3D is cute, and since the FP’s were now due for Toy Story, we went back. All of us enjoyed this ride. I did score better than the 1st time, however not quite 300,000; nor 200,000. However, I did enjoy it as a fun attraction!

We had an early dinner reservation for Hollywood %26amp; Vine at 5:30, so we headed there. This is a nice place to eat to get the Fantasmic Package, but my choice was 50’s Prime Time, but when I was making the reservations, my wife said no to 50’s thinking it was the Sci-Fi diner. She did not want hamburgers.

After dinner, we walked around, shopped, shopped. By shopping, I mean looking. Why? Let’s do something like Rock n’ Rollercoaster, TOT, or Toy Story. Nooo.

Fantasmic was great as usual. It is so neat how they do the projections, along with the real performers. Just beautiful! We sat behind a little girl and her family from Wales. We had a really enjoyable time with them, exchanging stories, and pictures. One of the gentlemen liked our prices for ';petro.'; I explained to him that basically everything is relative. He kind of agreed after a while. I also explained to him that most wages in the UK were probably higher than here in the US.

Ok, Fantasmic finishes, let’s get an Ice-cream, or something. I want to let the crowd leave so we can relax a little and wait here, not at the buses. Why would tonight be any different?

Yes, this was the longest wait for the buses. They did have two when we arrived, but there were also two different sections for POP. OK, tomorrow we are going to EPCOT. It is my birthday eve. Future world opens at 9:00 AM. Let’s do breakfast at 8:00 AM, please? “No, let’s sleep in our last day, and meet at 8:30 AM.” Why did I bother to plan?

    Trip Report 5/26/08 Day 5

    Another great report, Cookieman!!

I hope birthday-eve will go more your way.

By the way, how did you like staying at Pop Century? You really haven%26#39;t addressed the resort yet in any of your reports, so was wondering about your ';good/bad/ugly'; experiences there and if you liked or disliked it.

    Trip Report 5/26/08 Day 5

    Hi, Kat

I liked the resort. As my reports state, we did not spend much time in the rooms. When I%26#39;m on vacation, I want to see things, not hang around the hotel. I%26#39;m happy if the room is clean. I only need the room to change and sleep.

I did like the icons on the resort. We stayed in building 6, 2nd floor. Rooms 6222, 6223, and 6224. The maids left us extra towels when we needed them for Typhoon Lagoon. We tipped $3 per day for the doubles, and $2 per day for the single. On the extra towel day we tipped $5 and $3 respectively.

The counter service meals (breakfast) was good. We did not do Pizza there. Staff were very good. The Everything Pop store was adequate.

Basically, I can%26#39;t say anything bad about the place. I%26#39;m sure the moderate are much more elaborate. but for me it was fine.

Now my wife - she told me next time she wants to stay at the Poly. She had stayed at the Contemporary when her daughters were little.

    Did I answer your question?

My greenhouse has a vacancy in August if you are still interested.

Yes, Cookie, that%26#39;s a fine review of Pop. I understand about just needing the ';bed and shower'; aspect of a hotel.

We were supposed to stay at Pop last December for the first time, but we were surprised with a free upgrade to Coronado. I%26#39;ll be shooting for a stay at Pop again this year, however, and just like to get everyone%26#39;s opinions on it.

We toured around the Pop resort on our December visit on our ';leaving day'; and loved the ';frozen smoothies'; at the food court...helped ourselves to several refills there with our mugs.

Going from Pop to the Poly on the next visit will be a big ';hunk'; out of the wallet, however, so be prepared.

    Bike rentals

My family will be in Sanibel June 16-21 and I would like to know the cost of renting bikes by the day or by the week. Also, does anybody have a preference of which bike shop to use?

    Bike rentals

Either Finnemores or Billy%26#39;s Rentals are fine and priced about the same. I think they run about $40-50 or so per week and they will deliver them and pick them up for a nominal charge. Both provide helmuts and locks.

Need Large villa near Disney and Golf

Any ideas on best location? Looking for 5-6 bedrooms, pool, golf near the Theme parks.

Any golf course suggestions for low handicappers?

Need Large villa near Disney and Golf

You might take a look at Ginn Reunion Resorts. Have not stayed there, but it looks like it would fit with what you want.

Need Large villa near Disney and Golf

    Omni Championsgate. It%26#39;s the best.

Old Key West is on a golf course- if you are looking for a Disney Resort....a tad overpriced, thou

Hi. We stayed at a 5 BR pool house at Reunion in April and loved it! It%26#39;s about 15 minutes easy access off I-4 to the Disney parks. Also convenient to grocery stores, gas and drug store. There are 3 golf courses at Reunion and Championsgate is just down the road if you wanted more. All are great courses for low handicaps. There are many different neighborhoods at Reunion with several different styles of housing to choose from(hotel, condos, townhouse and pool homes). Guests can also use the community pools in each of the neighborhoods as well as the rooftop hotel pool, and lazy river pool with kid%26#39;s water playground.

It is a quiet development, which worked great for us. However, there wasn%26#39;t much for nighttime activities if that is something that interests you. I would be happy to answer any questions you have.

  • Can I make a Int'l Phone call through NET 10 Cell Phones

Can I make an international phone call through NEt 10 cell phone to a country not listed in their country List, even if I pay more for each call?

Can I make a Int'l Phone call through NET 10 Cell Phones

go to their website and ask.

Can I make a Int'l Phone call through NET 10 Cell Phones

The reason people ask throuh forums is to ask any person who have had any experience with the question. I%26#39;m quite sure everyone knows the option of going directly trhough a web site.

Don%26#39;t bother answering what you just answered, I checked their web site and found nothing about what I just asked in forum.

And I still don%26#39;t have the right answer to my question.

    Can Anyone help me????

That was a bit rude, and also you can contact them via their website and ask them directly, so it was a reasonable answer to your question.

However I have just checked through the book that came with the Net10 phone and it lists the ';available countries';, which suggests that any country not on the list is not available.

To the best of my knowledge, the answer is No. You can only call to those destinations listed. Of course, there would be nothing to prevent you using the Net10 phone in conjunction with a calling-card service, where you first call up a domestic US number.

    Boat Rental in the Keys

Does anyone know a good place to rent a boat in or near Key West? It would be a day or 1/2 day rental. Also, if you rent a boat and want to fish, is there a place you can rent bait and tackle? We are going in July and looking to make arrangements ahead of time. thanks for your help

    Boat Rental in the Keys

If you are staying at Capt Pips, they have boat rentals, also, Vacation Boat Rentals in Marathon. Not sure about equiptment rentals, but I%26#39;m sure the rentals companies will be able to answer that.

    Boat Rental in the Keys

Most places rent for a full day and during peak times will probably require 3 days.

When are you going in July? If its over the 4th, then I%26#39;d guess there isa 3 day minumum.

If its during the mini season, I%26#39;d bet taht you cna%26#39;t get a boat at this late date.

I mentioned inyour other post about Big Time Boat rental. They are associated with Big Time Bait and Tackle. Bait and Tackle has fishing equipment rentals.

Thanks for the help. I will check them out.

Dolphin Marina on Little Torch Key rents boats by the 1/2 day or all day.

You will need to call ahead to reserve one. They are at MM 28.5.

I have no idea about renting poles but I know for a fact that no one rents bait!!!

We just returned from the Keys for a week-long vacation. Before we went down, we had a boat reserved for two days with Dolphin Marina. The first day we got up early to get to the boat, only to be told there was a small craft advisory and they wouldn%26#39;t rent the boat when we arrived at the marina. Now granted, it was late Spring in the Keys, which can be rather windy. Plus, we had had some bad storms come through the night before. They didn%26#39;t charge us anything so we said, ok, we will try again later in the week, no big deal. However, we tried three other days getting, the same response about the small craft advisory. By the last day, we were starting to get aggravated, because it wasn%26#39;t even windy at that point. We ended up calling Fish%26#39;n Fun Boat Rentals in Marathon and they thought we were nuts when we asked about the small craft advisory, because there apparently wasn%26#39;t one, even after we had been told there was one by Dolphin Marina. We ended up renting from Fish%26#39;n Fun finally on the last day of the trip and had a great experience for a very comparable price. Another thing to consider is Dolphin Marina does not let you take the rental boats North of US1, which chops the amount of area you can access in half. Dolphin Marina seemed to be very overprotective of the boats and from what we saw, the boats weren%26#39;t even in perfect condition. They were going to rent us a boat that had a cosmetic leak at the steering column. They assured us that there was no danger with the leak and they were going to give us a discount. In all, I wasn%26#39;t impressed with Dolphin Marina%26#39;s service.

So you can%26#39;t take the boats into the Gulf with Dolphin Marina?

Just got back from KW late last night. We rented a brand new 22%26#39; center console from tropical Island Boat Rentals in Marathon. Full day price was $179.00 for the boat, $30 for 2 rods and we burned a whole 12 gallons of gas. www.tropicalboatrentals.com This is an absolute great place to rent from, fished under 7 mile bridge for a while, pulled up to eat lunch at Porky%26#39;s and then headed out to Sombrero lighthouse to do some snorkeling. We had a 3.5%26#39; Barracuda that decided to become friends with our boat while we were tied to the mooring bouy. We got to see two huge sea turtles and then had a pod of dolphins that came up to the boat on our way back (halfway between the light house and the western tip of Marathon) and allowed us to float along with them while they just swam all around us for around 30 minutes. The boats are literally brand new and have a great color GPS on board to guide you all around the island or wherever you decide to go. If you decide to use them and want to snorkel, request a dive flag b/c you need one. One of the best days of our whole trip!!! Thanks Tropical Boat Rentals!!!

  • Universal Meal Plan

Is it worth it to buy a couple of these for 4 people %26amp; share?

    Universal Meal Plan

We didn%26#39;t think Uni had a good selection of food and I read that you have to wait in line again for dessert so we didn%26#39;t do the meal plan. I don%26#39;t know if they would like you to share, they might not allow that?

    Universal Meal Plan

Oh I am sure that they would not like sharing. In fact I bet they don%26#39;t like it about as much as I don%26#39;t like paying to park, waiting in lines and having a limited menu to choose from.

Seriously though, I came across a couple of posts where people mentioned that they did that without any problems. They will be getting plenty of my money by the end of the week.

    Trip Report 5/27/08 Day 6

    Day 6 May 27

We meet at 8:45 AM. Everybody seems to be in a good mood. We have breakfast. On to EPCOT!

Today the park seems quiet. Crowd is less, the holiday is over. I suggest we get FP’s for Soarin’ then go to Test Track. They all agree! Soarin’ FP is 11:25 AM – 12:25 PM. So we go to Test Track. I love this ride! Did I mention that fact before? 10 minute wait. By the time we walked through the line, we were at the doors.

Next we head over to Nemo. There is no wait, so we get right on. Again a cute ride. I think I enjoyed it more with my granddaughter last year. Figment is a must, although just the fiancé and I wanted to go on. This was his first time since he was 9 years old the last time he visited, and he remembered “Figment.”

OK FP to Soarin’. Oldest does not want to go on. “What’s the big deal?” She waits outside for us. The countries are her “thing.” OK. After the exhilarating ride on Soarin’, we head to the World Showcase. We bypass Canada as we were there Thursday. On to England, or as I was corrected by a cute young sales girl from Scotland, “this is the UK.” I wanted a golf towel, but $20.00 to clean my golf balls was a little steep. We went into Morocco, oh, I forgot, the kids had to take pictures of themselves with hats on from every country. Too funny. They got me to participate a few times. I was getting hungry, so I saw a funnel cake stand. I stopped and ordered one. I had my birthday pin on so he said do you want anything on it? I said no, just the powdered sugar. He said well since it’s your Birthday, you can have either ice cream, chocolate sauce, something else. I said well… I took the ice cream. He said ';I’m going to add the chocolate sauce also.'; WOW! That was the best funnel cake I ever had.

Japan was our next stop. I found the clock section. I’m fascinated by watches and clocks. I found a clock I liked, it played different songs. It was $495.00. So I went to a smaller version - $79.95. I took a picture of it, the model number, and will be purchasing it soon.

Ok, “let’s go back to POP, swim, rest and get ready for Ed’s birthday dinner at Tutto Italia tonight at 7:00 PM.” We go back. In our room are three balloons, a card from my pal Mickey, and Minnie, and a picture of them in front of the castle. By the pool, I found a ping pong table. I’m happy. After a few games, we shower, and get dressed for my birthday celebration. We get back to EPCOT about 6:00PM, so we go to Mexico. Again with the hats. The youngest buys a little trinket for her little half sister. We leave and they “need” margaritas! My wife buys the four of them margaritas, I start for Italy.

We put our name in, and wait a few minutes. We are seated. Our waiter comes over and asks for our drink order. They are all looking at the menu. I order a diet coke with lemon. The girls are asked for ID’s. The youngest goes into her back pack, her wallet is not there. Panic city! She thinks Mexico. She jumps up and runs out. Her fiancé follows. Before he leaves, he tells us what he wants to eat, and what she wanted. The waiter is in shock. He gives us time to compose ourselves. In the meantime, the manager is asking him what is going on as half our table is missing. We order. We call the fiancé. They are on their way back. No wallet. She had her ATM card, a credit card, and her license in it.

Our meals come, and they have not returned yet. After fifteen more minutes, I ask that their meals be put in containers for take out. The waiter does it. We call again to inform them we need one of their cards for the meal. The waiter comes and asks if we want dessert. My wife is now totally upset. The fiancé comes in, and my wife leaves to be with her daughter. She is not coming back as “she has spoiled my birthday celebration.” In all honesty, that is not how I felt. She now decides that she should cancel the cards ASAP. Any way, fiancé chows down his meal out of the container. The waiter asks if we want dessert. Hey, it’s my birthday, of course I do. I order a cannoli. Oldest daughter says no, and fiancé also declines as he attacks the other container.

My wife calls to ask where we are, as she now wants to leave with her daughter. So the waiter brings the bill. We turn in the cards. He comes back with the individual bills, and explains mine is rejected. Now, I’m a little annoyed. The manager comes over (the one who was concerned as our table emptied). He says he will call the resort to get it straightened out. He returns at 8:55 PM. He goes through the place we had dinners. Apparently, Planet Hollywood had taken 4 meals off my card, and I had thought I had paid separately for my friends meals. I apologized to the manager and the waiter, then I paid the bill. At 9:20 PM, the three of us leave the restaurant. We missed most of Illuminations. We meet up with my wife and daughter. “Where were you? You were watching Illuminations!” “I’m sorry for spoiling your birthday.” We explained what had happened, and that I was definitely not upset with her.

She wants to go back to her room alone, and wants the four of us to stay for EMH. No way is that going to happen. She decides we should all stay then. We head back to customer Relations to again see if a wallet was returned. No such luck.

We are staying during EMH finally on our last night. YIPEE! Let’s do Test Track! Did I mention that I love this ride? Next we did spaceship earth. I really like the changes. We go to the Kodak store to get our three free pictures from photo pass. My wife and daughter go to Customer Relations one last time. They come back all smiles! The wallet was turned in – in tact. It was found in Italy.

Now we have to pick the three pictures. There was a great shot taken of me with my favorite characters Chip ‘n Dale. A great shot of all of us in front of the castle, and a shot of the five of us in front of the ball.

I’m out voted again, and it’s three of the one of all of us in front of the castle. They leave me alone to wait for the pictures. I give the cashier my coupons, and am waiting for the girl who took care of us to give me my bag with the pictures she put in it. She asks that I wait one minute. She shows me the picture of Chip ‘n Dale and me. Then she says “happy birthday Ed.” All I could say was thank you.

We get back to POP, and I have had a great day. Tomorrow we have to be at the Magical Express at 11:45 AM. Do what ever you want! Just be ready by 11:45 AM.

    Trip Report 5/27/08 Day 6

There%26#39;s nothing like the panic of thinking you%26#39;ve lost your money, c.c.%26#39;s, ATM cards, and license. I%26#39;m so glad the wallet was turned in.

I also got to spend my birthday at Epcot last year, and it was a great experience. Sorry you missed Illuminations with the credit mixup.

Thank you to all who replied to my previous post. I now want to know if we stayed in a condo or villa what is the nearest beach to the town or historic centre of St Augustine? Finding it quite expensive for the b%26amp;b%26#39;s and hotels in the city (as mum and dad are footing the bill) so thought maybe a condo might work out better value. We really have set our hearts on St Augustine%26#39;s now as it looks beautiful.

I have looked at maps but because we don%26#39;t know the area I don%26#39;t know the distances involved.

    Any further help appreciated.

Anastasia State Park Beach is the first nearest beach since it is only a mile and half away south from bridge of lions, Vilano Beach is the second nearest beach being only 2 miles north of downtown from vilano bridge and St.Augustine Beach is 3.7 miles away south of downtown which is 3rd nearest beaches.

There is a great website that can help you. vrbo.com

All you have to do is look for St. Augustine Beach or Vilano Beach, and it will list, with pictures, all the condos for rent. Each listing has a calender so you can tell right away if it%26#39;s available and in your price range. Each beach is only a few miles away from the old city.

Good luck! You%26#39;ll have a great time!!
